Operating Conditions
The drain valve service is one of the most severe applications for any valve in a power plant. These valves normally see a wide range of conditions; forst cool condensate, followed by ever increasing pressure and temperature that causes the condensate to flash into steam and ultimately high pressure and temperature steam. The outlet condition is condenser vacuum.
One of the main considerations in this application is seat leakage. During turibine operation this valve is closed against a high pressure with a vacuum on the outlet. Seat leakage is not only expensive from a maintenance standpoint but the cost of generationg turbine grade steam is expensive as well.
The power industry has determined that a throttling control valve in this application will improve the reliability and efficiency of this type drain system.
